The SOPIRA colour-coding is correspondent to the wavelengths of visible light and its colour spectrum: The longer the wavelength of the labelling colour, the longer the injection needle.

Applications
- Intraseptalis: Injection into the interdental bone septum for anaesthesia of the adjacent terminal nerve fibres.
- Infiltration: Injection in the submucosa for anaesthesia of the terminal nerve fibres in the surrounding soft tissues and bones.
- Intraligamentalis: Injection in the periodontal space for complete anaesthesia of the individual tooth.
- Mandibularis: Injection in the immediate vicinity of the alveolaris inferior nerve for analgesia in the area distal to the injection site that is supplied by the nerve.
The indications listed are general recommendations. However, specific anatomical particularities must be taken into consideration by the dentist when selecting the cross-section and length of the needle.
